Selma Burke's Together is newest addition to Patricia D. Pfundt
Sculpture Garden
The Board of Trustees and the Director of the James A. Michener Art Museum
are pleased to announce the newest addition to the
Patricia D. Pfundt Sculpture Garden --
Together, a sculpture by Selma Burke.
Noted for her famous portrait of President Franklin D. Roosevelt which was
the model for the engraving on the dime, Burke was also a gifted educator
and tireless promoter of the arts. She was honored and recognized by The
Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Pearl Buck Foundation and
President Carter. In 1993, she was named a Distinguished Daughter of
Pennsylvania.
The strength that enabled her as a sculptor to wield an axe, hammer and
chisel is evident in her powerful rendition of Together. The Michener
Art Museum had sought to obtain this sculpture for ten years and finally
received the cast resin piece in July 2000. With the help of the Friends of
Selma Burke, the 6-foot high sculpture was cast in bronze in 2002 and now
occupies a place of prominence in the Patricia D. Pfundt Sculpture Garden.
