Joe Mooney: Phoenix
July 29 - October 29, 2006
Outdoor Sculpture Program, Doylestown

Philadelphia sculptor Joe Mooney works in welded steel, making graceful, organic sculptures that often hint at the human body as well as animal and bird forms. He takes hard, cold rigid, heavy gauge steel, to create forms that seem to be the antithesis of raw material. Mooney enjoys the contrast between the heavy steel and the seemingly airy and weightless designs that emerge from his oxy-acetylene torch. He also pays close attention to the bases for his sculptures: "It's what grounds the work," he says. "From that solid, rational foundation, the spirit can take off."

Joe Mooney received his art training at Penn State University and Alfred University, and has had more than 70 solo and group exhibitions of his work at such institutions as the State Museum of Pennsylvania, the Woodmere Art Museum, and Widener University.

The Outdoor Sculpture Program highlights the work of contemporary American sculptors and is sponsored by Premier Bank.
