Music and Awards
Michener's office included a music system which is featured in this area of the
exhibit. It was assembled and largely built by Michener himself including the
speakers. On this desk, there is a certificate given to James A. Michener by
Former President Ronald Reagan on May 17, 1983 for his "civic leadership in
providing longstanding and continuing support of artistic excellence and for
bringing art of the highest quality to citizens across the nation." Also on this
desk, you can find various awards presented to Michener, or Michener and his
wife. One award presented to both Michener and his wife includes one from 1988
from the Board of Directors of the Texas Association of Schools of Art, "in
recognition and appreciation of notable contributions to the visual arts in
Texas".
Other awards given to Michener found on this desk include: the Bucks County
Commissioners Distinguished Service Award in 1985, and the Freedom Award –
Outstanding Service for a Free Hungary, commemorating the Hungarian Revolution
on October 23, 1956. This desk also includes a gavel that was presented to
Michener on his address to the Texas House of Representatives on March 28, 1983.
