This exhibition featured more than 20 black and white photographs by
Philadelphia area photographer Stephen G. Williams utilizing both the
traditional silver gelatin process and the digital process known as
Piezography. The exhibition combined recent images with work Williams
made in the 1970s.
Williams has been visiting the Shakers in Maine since the early 1970s,
drawing spiritual strength from their habits of work and prayer, and
artistic inspiration from their quest for harmony, economy, and
perfection.
"My long involvement with the American Shakers is inseparable from my life in
photography," said Stephen G. Williams. "I learned to use a camera and film
competently as I documented the Sabbathday Lake community when I was a young man.
It was my first attempt at blending art and documentary images."
