Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the Michener need to renovate and expand?
- The Museum has reached the limit of available gallery space. Many
works in the collection must remain stored out of public view, and the
current storage vault, builtin 1993, is crammed with objects.
- Space dedicated for special exhibitions is too small for many national
touring exhibitions. The Museum has had to turn down offers of numerous
outstanding exhibitions and limited its ability to present large-scale
work by today's artists.
- Art preparation and handling areas are no longer up to professional
standards.
- Education and public program spaces are inadequate to meet the
increasing needs of the community. This has limited the number of classes,
lectures and concerts offered.
What will happen to the existing building when the new section opens?
- The existing building will become part of the expansion and renovation.
All parts of the existing facilities will be used in the renovation and
creation of our new spaces.
Will the Museum be open during construction? What about the café, the
classrooms, and gift shop?
- Yes, the Museum will be open during construction. Any event or program
changes will be listed on the online calendar which is updated frequently,
news will be in the Quarterly or you may call the Museum with
specific questions during the construction. There may be temporary
closings in the Café or Gift Shop during Phase II. Call the Museum for an
update at 215-340-9800.
What will happen to the collection during construction?
- The permanent collection will continue to be displayed as scheduled
during construction. Permanent collection pieces not on view will be
stored in the current storage vault.
What will happen to the traveling exhibitions that are on the schedule during
this time?
- The Michener's Director and our Curators have given careful consideration
as to what can be done during construction so that traveling exhibitions
that have been planned can be accommodated.
Will this affect educational and public programming and tours?
- We do not anticipate major disruption to our educational and public
programs, but any significant changes to scheduling will be posted on our
online calendar and registrants will be notified. You may also call the
Museum for information.
How will the local community and region benefit from this project?
- When the renovation and expansion project is completed the Museum will be
able better serve the needs of our growing community and region. We will
continue to be a valued cultural resource for generations to come.
When will this project be completed?
- The Museum anticipates completion of the project in 2009.
