RMJM Hillier
Hillier was founded in 1966 by J. Robert Hillier on the belief that design is
the creation of the appropriate balance of all of the intricate forces that act
on a project, from gravity, to context, to program, to economics, to politics;
that the resulting architecture would be of its time and of its place. The
portfolio of projects spans a forty year journey of discovery and invention that
has touched people and places far and wide. Our clients find in us the
knowledge, passion and drive to create places that bear their imprint and can
raise the bar on everything they do. Each new project is an opportunity to
improve upon the past and to seek ever more exciting ways to bring people
together in their shared adventure.
In 2007, Hillier merged with RMJM to form RMJM Hillier, an architectural firm
with 1,100 employees in 17 offices throughout the United States, Europe, Middle
East and Asia.
Barbara A. Hillier, AIA
Barbara Hillier is a principal and one of the firm's leading architectural and
interior designers. She brings an unbridled passion for discovery to each project and engages her clients as partners on the journey.
"In the physical realm, design is the poetic subtext that drives our
emotions. We live in a world where design is the factor that affects our choices
in everything from the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the cars we drive and
the places we go. It is a powerful driver of a restless society whose need for
identification with technology and quality are constantly pushing innovation.
I want to help my clients achieve the most they can within whatever their
realistic limits may be."
Barbara's work is informed by a deeply felt responsibility for design as the
mediator between nature and civilization where the forces of each alternatively
challenge and guide the other. She writes, "Architecture is experienced as the
artful blend of objective reason and subjective impression that can elevate the
human spirit in the process of meeting its desired expectations for habitation
and performance. Regardless of size or purpose, each project is a puzzle
waiting to be solved. It is through listening to the client and respecting the
physical surroundings that sets the range of possibilities."
Her design career spans more than 25 years of creative thought, writing and
design that has been recognized for its excellence by juries of her peers and
members of the communities in which she works. Her work on the Abbe Science
Center for the Solebury School has received numerous design awards - including
the highest honor from the AIA Philadelphia—and has been published
extensively. She is currently working on a new gymnasium and a performing arts
center for the Solebury School. She holds bachelors' degrees from Arcadia
College and Temple University and a master's degree from the University of
Pennsylvania. She and her family reside in Bucks County.
