The grounds of the old Bucks County jail—known locally during its last twenty years as "The Pine Street Hotel"—are now occupied by the James A. Michener Art Museum. The jail survived almost eighty years of tough, medieval prison discipline before Major John D. Case, a remarkably humane man, took over as warden. He, together with the community whose imagination and cooperation he captured, transformed the old jail into one of the most outstanding prisons systems in the United States—a jail with a soul.
It seems fitting, therefore, that the creative spirit he introduced into the old jail complex be replaced by the creative energy and beauty of the art museum.
A wonderful read for historians, architects, prison reformers, museum goers and the generally curious.
