The Explore Through the Art Door Curriculum Binder and CD-ROM
Discover the artists, the permanent collection, and the history of the Michener Art Museum with this exciting resource for you and your students. This comprehensive tool is designed to introduce teachers and students to the rich cultural heritage of the Bucks County region.
The Explore Through the Art Door Curriculum Binder and CD-ROM is an interdisciplinary program designed for use in all subject areas. The Curriculum Binder is a resource to be used by teachers, which provides activity and lesson ideas to use in the classroom. The CD-ROM is an enhancement to the Curriculum Binder geared for students. Both resources are divided into five distinct units of study based on the arts - sculpture, landscape painting, architecture, James A. Michener himself, and lastly, the musicians, writers and playwrights of Bucks County. Each unit focuses on a specific aspect of the permanent collection at the James A. Michener Art Museum. These chapters include:
- Look Into Landscape
- Learning with Lassie
- Space and Place
- Mr. Michener, The Legacy Lives
- Creative Bucks County: A Celebration of Art and Artists
The Curriculum Binder contains:
- Five chapters of interdisciplinary classroom activities, sample rubrics, vocabulary, visuals, and references to resource materials for further study
- A set of slides for each chapter
- Pocket dividers containing supplemental materials for duplication in the classroom
The CD-ROM contains:
- Complete biographical information on artists and samples of artwork
- Maps of artist's homes
- Interactive 'looking' activities exploring deeper into works of art
- Interactive 'lotto' activities for projects done in the classroom
- Downloadable lessons, vocabulary and student activity sheets for use in the classroom and at the Michener Art Museum
Teachers can use these materials to enrich their curriculum by bringing the Museum's collections into the classroom or to prepare students for a trip to the Michener Art Museum. All materials connect to National and State Standards in Education. This resource is appropriate for students grades four and up. The CD-ROM is Mac and Windows compatible.

The original Curriculum Binder project was supported jointly by a Pennsylvania History and Museum Grant from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and a Legislative Initiative Grant through the efforts of former State Senator Craig Lewis. Additional funding has been provided by a Legislative Initiative Grant from the Department of Community and Economic Development through State Senator Joe Conti. The CD-Rom was a program developed in partnership with School Works! and was supported by funding through the Verizon Foundation, The Connelly Foundation, Sovereign Bank, and a State Legislative Initiative Grant through Senator Joe Conti.
