Fallsington Elementary School, Pennsbury School District, Fall Session, 2001, Art on the Move.

Art on the Move is a cooperative educational program offered through the Bucks County Intermediate Unit #22 and the Michener Art Museum. This program includes an extensive collection of artwork owned by the Bucks County Intermediate Unit #22 and cared for by the Michener Art Museum.

Through Art on the Move, original works of art are exhibited in participating Bucks County schools for approximately 8-10 weeks, accompanied by interdisciplinary curriculum materials, in-service training, museum outreach lessons, and visiting artists. This program brings local art history into the lives of many of the children in Bucks County.

The Bucks County Intermediate Unit Collection is comprised of artwork that has been part of a collection for over 50 years. This collection was a project begun in the 1940's by Bucks County Schools Superintendent, Dr. Charles H. Boehm and noted Pennsylvania Impressionist painter Walter E. Baum. Baum donated over a dozen paintings and assisted Boehm in collecting local artwork for what became the "Traveling Art Gallery". The educational purpose of creating this "Traveling Art Gallery" was to expose school children to local artists and enhance their appreciation of their art heritage. These artists included Pennsylvania Impressionists who were part of the group known as the "New Hope Art Colony" and area Modernist painters. This work was displayed in Bucks County schools for many years View the Art on the Move website and read more information about the collection and its history.

In 2007, the Michener Art Museum received an award from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to expand this program into its current phase, Art Speaks/Bucks County. This phase brings contemporary art and artists from the IU collection into the public or private school classroom. Out of 414 applications received by IMLS, only 158 received awards. This is the third IMLS grant for educational programs the Museum has received in four years. Visit the pressroom for more details about this exciting phase.
